Indie Brighton Listings: 29th August - 4th September 2024
Psych! Femrock! It’s all kicking off in Brighton as the summer comes to an end
Hello! Late again I’m afraid, but determined to make this a regular thing, even if I’m not in the city of Brighton at the time. I’ve included a listing for yesterday, just to keep you on your toes.
Today, incidentally, I write from York, where you can see an Oasis covers band every night, and the only upcoming live comedy is Roy Chubby Brown…
Thursday 29th August
Hidden Herd Presents Car Boot Sale + FEZ + The Roebucks, Prince Albert, 8pm. £9. A “new material discovery night” with a lovely Friday bill. The Roebucks are particularly gorgeous, but any of these bands could be tipped as the next big thing by the NME in 2002, in a good way.
Friday 30th August
Brighton Psych Fest, various venues, 4pm - 1am. £49 ish. Cracking lineup, lots of venues taking part, and Stewart Lee curating his own evening of freaks and outsiders in The Komedia. Lee: “Brighton Psych Fest asked me to host and program a stage, which is reckless of them as the last thing I curated, the 2016 Prestatyn All Tomorrow’s Parties, went bust.”
Anastasia Coope, The Folklore Rooms, 19:30. £11. Whoozy, loopy, ephemeral folk and psychedelia. In an Animal Collective vein, but this songwriter has a style and idiom all of her own.
Saturday 31st August
FemRock All Dayer, Arcobaleno, 3pm-late. From £10 (“but no one will be turned away due to lack of funds” ❤️). Brilliant lineup of women and LGBTQ+ fronted bands. Revel in the glory of this lineup: PINK SUITS, DAFFODILDOS, BREAKUP HAIRCUT, ANTIFA SUPERSOLDIER, COWZ, THE GLITTERBOMBS, BABY SAID, GAY SKELETON CLUB, SKUTTERFLY. Sounds amazing, wish I was going tbh.
The Campfire Club: Brighton, The Earthship, Stanmer, 7pm. £18. The Nest Collective’s long running celebration of live music in front of a bonfire. They tend towards the folk; always a transcendent experience.
The Big Bash, The Brunswick, 12pm, £10 donation. Fundraiser for Macmillan Cancer Support, which is commendable in itself, but I’m mainly listing this because I can’t remember the last time I saw an event proudly announcing it’s hosting a pie-eating contest.
Wombo + Support, The Hope & Ruin, 8pm. £14. Melodic, storytelling post-punk with fantastical flourishes.
Sunday 1st September
Cabaret Lab, The Caroline of Brunswick, 7:30pm. Free. Open mic / new material night more for queers, clowns, burlesque dancers, jugglers, and ice-lickers than straight stand-ups with views about IKEA, but they’re so welcoming I’m sure you’ll be accepted anyway.
Season’s Turn: Tales of Summer into Autumn, The Yellow Book, 7pm. £10. Stories and tales on the changing seasons and - if you can face it - the impending darkness of autumn.
Monday 2nd September
Cinema Crapadiso, The Caroline of Brunswick, 7pm. Free. Bimonthly (ish) night where you get to watch a so-shit-it’s-genius film in the company of other B-movie nerds. Sounds fun.
Tuesday 3rd September
Native Harrow, The Folklore Rooms, 7:30pm. £11. Accomplished country/folk/rock from Philadelphia duo who have definitely not been to Harrow.
Ed’s Comedy Club, Presuming Ed’s, 8pm. Free. New material / open mic night. Sometimes you’ll be the only person there who isn’t due to be on stage, and the whole evening turns into an accidental piece of performance art.
Wednesday 4th September
Cool-Aid Comedy, The Caroline of Brunswick, 8pm. Free. Friendly, regular new material night. Expect flashes of genius, some awkward moments, and charming, non-cruel MCing.
That’s it for this week. It’s exciting to see more events get posted as we emerge from the August lull.. lots more shows to tell you about next time (and I’ll try to publish you know on the right day this time).
Peace,
J x
